MiD GROWN TEAS

Mid-grown teas are cultivated at altitudes between 600 to 1,200 meters (2,000 to 4,000 feet) above sea level, in central regions of Sri Lanka like Kegalle, Matale, and parts of Kandy. Mid-grown teas strike a balance between the robustness of low-grown teas and the delicate flavor profiles of high-grown varieties, making them a versatile option with a unique taste profile.

Characteristics

  • Flavor : Mid-grown teas offer a well-rounded, mellow flavor, often described as brisk with fruity and sometimes nutty notes. They have a moderate strength, which appeals to a wide range of tea drinkers.

  • Appearance : The leaves of mid-grown teas are typically medium in size with a slight twist, and the liquor tends to be a warm, golden-brown.

  • Body : Mid-grown teas have a smooth, full-bodied character that is slightly less intense than low-grown teas but more robust than high-grown ones.

Production and Types

Mid-grown teas are primarily produced as orthodox black teas, but green and specialty teas are also crafted in some estates. These teas work well on their own or with a splash of milk, making them suitable for both morning and afternoon tea.

Popular Markets

Mid-grown teas are widely popular in countries like the UK, Japan, and parts of Europe, where tea drinkers appreciate their balanced profile. These teas offer a refreshing taste that is neither overpowering nor too delicate, making them versatile for different palates.

Quality and Sustainability

Many mid-grown estates prioritize quality and sustainability, with an emphasis on ethical farming practices and eco-friendly processes. By meeting stringent standards, mid-grown teas maintain Sri Lanka's global reputation for premium tea.
